The magical metropolis of London
London, the bustling, dynamic capital city of England, is one of the oldest cities in the world. The city boasts thousands of years of history, literature and culture. Spending time in this vibrant city presents an opportunity for any student of the English language to watch it come to life.
Besides the obvious educational advantages, a trip to London is also a wonderful cultural experience. Vocabulary and the rules of grammar are only small parts of the journey to fluency in English; it is equally important to share the cultural and historical experiences tied to the language.
There are countless exhibitions and events taking place in London all the time, and 2024 is no exception. To inspire those looking to take a trip to England over the coming year, I will below outline some of the most interesting and relevant events in London in 2024, broken down by category.
Art
London is home to some 857 art galleries, including the renowned Tate Modern and the National Gallery. As you can imagine, there is no shortage of art exhibitions or cultural events held by these galleries.
Intermingling art with history and politics, Laughing Matters: The State of a Nation is certainly worth a visit for those who are interested in the wider heritage of the United Kingdom. This exhibition hosts various objects, including costumes and even music, to explore the role of humour in the UK, from the history of the British empire to its role in politics today.
This exhibition is taking place at the V&A Museum in South Kensington, from now until the 13th of March 2024. Admission is free of charge.
The National Gallery will be 200 years old on the 10th of May 2024. On this date, the Gallery will begin its Bicentenary celebration, which will continue for a full year. This celebration will be predominantly based at the National Gallery, located at Trafalgar Square in central London, though there are related events planned online and worldwide to coincide with this great celebration. If you will be travelling to London next summer, it would certainly be worth paying a visit to the Gallery to view some of the special exhibitions planned as part of the celebration. In fact, it could be worth travelling elsewhere around the United Kingdom, as the Gallery plans to open 12 simultaneous exhibitions around the nation, each centred around a National Treasure, so that most of the population of the United Kingdom will have access to a National Gallery masterpiece.
As the event looks both to the UK’s past and its future, this exhibition is an opportunity to acquaint oneself with its culture in a way never done before, and to give some background to how its laws and language developed.
Gastronomy
How much do you know about typical British food and gastronomy? If you want to learn about and sample the best of British food and international cuisines, you should consider attending the Taste of London food festival. Taste describes itself as a ‘food-fuelled garden party’. Attendees can purchase food and drink from the best up-and-coming British chefs.
With cookery schools, cocktail-making classes and live music and entertainment, Taste is about more than just food. What better way to get to know the culture of the United Kingdom?
The festival takes place in June each year and is likely to take place in mid-June 2024 – just in time for the English summer!
Other typical British events
To add to the exhibitions and festivals above, there are of course many long-standing, typically British events held in London each year.
If you are a fan of tennis, or sports in general, the Wimbledon Championships are set to take place from the 1st to the 14th of July 2024. This is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and commonly regarded as the most prestigious. If you fancy watching some of the world’s best tennis champions compete, why not attend this prestigious sporting event? You might even bump into a member of the Royal Family.
Ticket sales will open in September 2023. Tickets are always in high demand, so be sure to set a reminder.
Avid gardeners will be thrilled by the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, an opportunity to wander around the gardens of some of the world’s greatest horticulturalists and designers. With musical entertainment, stalls selling must-have garden wares and even food and drink vendors, this is bound to be a great weekend away.
The Show is held in May every year, and it set to begin on the 19th of May 2024.
How will you choose?
With so many events and cultural activities taking place in London next year, it will be difficult to select just one. Whether you decide to attend one or many of these events, you will inevitably return home with a better understanding of English society and traditions. It is crucial to occasionally take a step away from your busy life and dedicate time to entertainment, travel and immersing yourself in culture, putting your studies into perspective. A well-rounded education is the best kind. Your clients, not to mention your future self, will thank you.
