More and more, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world. Although it is often associated with romance, in many cultures, Valentine’s Day is also an occasion to show appreciation for friends, family and co-workers. Indeed, it is an excellent opportunity for managers to say « thank you » to their teams, particularly in work environments that are increasingly international. One of the best and simplest ways to do that is to send a personalized Valentine’s Day card, or « Valentine ».

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VALENTINE

While some would say that the Valentine was invented by Americans in order to boost the greeting card industry, many historians suggest its cultural roots go back to ancient Rome and the Christian martyr, Saint Valentine himself. In the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became more closely linked to romantic love, partly due to the influence of courtly love in France. In fact, the first known surviving Valentine was a poem written by Charles, the Duke of Orléans, to his wife while he was being held in the Tower of London in 1415. In the 1700’s, Valentine’s Day was celebrated in Britain by exchanging little presents such as flowers and handwritten notes. It was during the industrial revolution that Valentine’s Day cards were mass-produced in Britain. In the United States, Esther Howland, an American entrepreneur, also launched her own mass-production and is credited with making Valentine’s Day an American tradition.
